Sirat al Mustaqeem

The reason my grandfather believed in God so
strongly had less to do with God and more the
creatures He created
to haunt those who stayed out long after the sky had swallowed the sun.

Both the villagers of Kapisa and the lonely mountains of
Hindu Kush whisper about the smokey outlines of the
creatures made of fire.
Skin the color of melted wax and
gaping holes where you would find the
windows to one's soul.

Legend has it on a night when the moon refused to hide behind
the mountain's highest peak, the King of jinns decided to hold a
celebration to find a suitor for his daughter. A handsome
drunkard stumbling home
—who was led off Sirat al Mustaqeem quite some time ago, followed the
drums to the festivities.

With one glance at the jinn princess, he declared she was as
beautiful as a cellar full of wine and after many drunken
years
proceeded to embrace the
sobering effect of her beauty.

The newfound lovers danced, and eventually the princess fell into a deep
slumber.

In honor of his new blessing, the young man decreed he
would pray for as-salatu khayrun minan-nawm.
No sooner had he declared these words did
his paramour turn into her true form.

The man immediately headed toward the mosque and went straight into
sajdah.
The locals say he died in that position, refusing
to open his eyes, mouth, or heart again for anyone
except for God.
